Permanent + Agriculture + Blitz = Permablitz

Permablitz Bay of Plenty is relaunching during Climate Action Week at Ngapeke Permaculture, September 15th 2024.

What is Permablitz?

Permablitz is more than just gardening; it’s a collective effort rooted in permaculture design principles. It brings together volunteers to create productive and regenerative gardens in a single day. This concept originated as a response to the need for localized food production, community engagement, and ecological stewardship.

How Does It Work?

The essence of Permablitz lies in its structure: community-driven and educational. Each event is orchestrated by individuals with a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC), ensuring that gardens are not only beautiful but also ecologically sound and productive. Participants, often from diverse backgrounds, come together to learn, share skills, and contribute to transforming urban and suburban landscapes into thriving ecosystems.

The Permablitz Experience

Picture yourself joining a Permablitz event—perhaps in the welcoming surroundings of Ngapeke Permaculture during Climate Action Week. You engage in hands-on activities like planting, mulching, and building compost systems, guided by principles such as:

  1. Observe and Interact: Understanding the local environment and ecosystem dynamics to create sustainable designs.
  2. Catch and Store Energy: Utilizing renewable resources like sunlight and rainwater efficiently.
  3. Obtain a Yield: Designing gardens to produce food, medicine, or other useful products while enhancing ecosystem health.
  4. Apply Self-regulation and Accept Feedback: Adapting designs based on feedback from the environment and community.
  5. Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services: Maximizing natural resources and reducing dependence on non-renewable inputs.

Throughout the day, workshops on topics ranging from water harvesting to companion planting enrich your understanding of sustainable practices.

Permablitzes are inclusive, free events open to all. They foster a sense of community through shared meals, where participants bond over freshly harvested produce and homemade dishes. Beyond gardening, Permablitzes promote physical activity and well-being, reconnecting individuals with the outdoors and each other.

The Reciprocal Model

Central to Permablitz is reciprocity. Participants are encouraged to pay it forward: by attending two Permablitz events, they earn the opportunity to host one at their own home or community space. This model ensures that the movement grows organically, spreading knowledge and sustainable practices across neighborhoods and cities.

Join the Permablitz Movement

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a curious newcomer, Permablitz offers a welcoming space to contribute to positive environmental change. By participating, you not only cultivate gardens but also cultivate relationships and a deeper connection to the land.
